Scotland Day 2: Getting rained off the course!

Ohh, our first Scottish breakfast! Just eggs, sausage, and toast, but with tea! And very fresh berries! And a nice chat with Karen and Ann.

Then off we were to the Ladies Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club. The mist was starting, and by the time we got there, it turned to a light rain. We were one of 7-8 cars in the visitors lot because this was the pro-am practice day. In fact, we saw Lissette Salas on the driving range— very cool.

With the weather, two things happened. We looked for the merchandise tents for shelter, and I didn’t take any pictures. Take my word for it, they were out there having a great time.

After a few low, low-priced purchases, we took off for North Berwick. Our game there isn’t until tomorrow, but we wanted to toddle around town and have a late lunch before our game at Longniddry at 3 pm. I did the charity shops (thrift stores to us) and a hardware store for stretchy cords (for our golf bags). The man who helped me had one of those accents that was very brogue. “I canna understand yea, but I than its bungee cords yer after.” Perfect, yes, thank you. “Nae bother.” Very cool and worth the price!

At the Herringbone Restaurant in town, we had a few sandwiches when a Labrador and owner walked in out of the rain. Just then John noticed how many dogs were “having lunch.” 6-7-8 and now 9 dogs! All quietly sleeping at their owners’ feet. We had no idea they were even there.

We were scheduled to play a course we’d never played before, Longniddry. After a very warm welcome…

Look closely for our name. They don’t get many foreign visitors here and yet is started off as a very charming course with a look at the sea in places too!

First hole, nice. Second hole, good job. Third hole, oops, rain, rain, then hard rain. On the green, putting for par when we heard the horn blow. We were quickly ushered off the course and told to wait around until the lightning stopped. It never did. So we watched golf in the bar and had an early dinner while the rain poured outdoors. It was a very pleasant evening.

Later, back at the Standingstone, we hung out with Karen and Ann. Karen suggested that there was an old cord of some kind dangling from the roof, so Johnny climbed out our bathroom window to find it, coil it, and throw it over a second roof and onto the ground. Well, there’s one problem solved!

Tomorrow, one of the nicest golf courses in Scotland!
