Our last day…
We awoke to the familiar and still silence of life at the Standingstone. Karen and Ann were both out early this morning, so we were on our own for breakfast. We’d already arranged to have a late breakfast at the course so we could make it all the way around before an early dinner.

Gullane #1 is the championship course here. Last year it hosted both the men’s and women’s Scottish Open. We were here for two days of the LET (Ladies European Tour) and loved watching “girls” (as they call themselves) play from the back tees and make pars and birdies all over the place.

Today, we were joined by Steve, an American from La Quinta (of all places!) who played a pretty straight game despite the very stiff wind. This gale reminded me of sailing to the island in winter. You have to know exactly where it’s coming from to send it into the stratosphere and watch as it bounces around and comes to land right where you want it to. Unfortunately, many, many shots landed in tall grass. No funny lost balls today, just deeply lost ones. This was survival golf. And yet it was great fun!

John birdied #11 with three great shots. I was on in regulation and three-putted. But that’s golf! The sea was bright with whitecaps and the dark clouds were rolling in fast with the wind. Still, we managed to beat the rain— every drop. And I nailed my last drive, made it to the green, and putted out for a four on the very last hole in Scotland— for this year.

Food pictures start tonight. Yum!
