Day 14: Nuuk, Greenland for the Day.

We left Sisimut late last night and got the Aura call over the loud speaker. It was 12:45 am and there we were in our briefs and wraps (luggage was taken hours before) with the window down, trying to see what we could see through the briefly clear skies. We’re happy to report that another passenger took great photos, which we could not get. So thank you, David! Very cool that Viking woke us up for the event, though!!

In the morning, we woke up back at Nuuk, now very familiar territory. After all, we played golf here on our first day, toodle around the small town on our own and took a bus tour on the second day, and now we were back. It took a while to get off the ship and then a bit of a wait even in the first group, then on the bus tour the Cultural Center and then we could drop our heavy carry ons and hit the road for a lovely walk.

The temperature was in the high 30’s so we bundled up—hats and gloves— and headed for the sea. The coast is the beautiful part of town and last time, we hurried from thing to thing. Today, we could go leisurely.

This is one of our Zodiac crew, helping with the final goodbye. She always met us below decks wearing her polar bear hat, but today it was so cold that she had his paws wrapped around her neck!

First to the museum where we just shopped. I bought a great little book on making the town of Nuuk out of colored paper and John searched for a geology book. We’re finding that all items from overseas are suddenly priced with huge tariffs. My $14 book was $81 on Amazon now. Good reason to buy it here.

This old dory with a perfectly weathered patina was sitting at the edge of Old Town near the sea.

We walked through the old part of town and out to Our Lady of the Sea statue, then up to Egede’s statue(first Lutheran missionary to convert the country). Great views!.

Egede looks out to sea but this is the hard climb up as you can see!

We realized we were freezing, so headed back to the Cultural Center for lunch and a chat with David and Kathy. They loved the paper cutting book and decided to go hunting for their own copy.

The paper cutting book is as charming as Greenland. These houses and boats are everywhere!

Then out we went again to the art museum which was both inspiring and depressing. Arctic madness is a thing, we learned. Extended darkness is something we really don’t understand at our latitude.

From the museum…visions of bleak winter darkness.
Thick, gooey darkness…
A view of the shore-side Nuuk. The way it really is on a fine summer day… brrrr!

Finally, New York, which is a cool ending to the story because we were upgraded to the front of the plane, then whisked off to the TWA Hotel. Heard of it? Completely retro and like stepping into a ‘60s movie set, of maybe The Jetsons. Check out the photos. And the hotel connects directly with Jet Blue, so we had an easy morning “getting” to the airport. Hope to see all of you soon, or at least chat. Happy travels, wherever you might be going.

It was quite late when we got there, but this is the airport diner!
The Twister room. We weren’t sure whether or not we could walk on the spots. Decided against it.
This looks like a dollhouse, but it is full size! Good time for a new do!
Howard Hugh’s office—check out the whiskey glass and even a bit of trash!
