Golfing in Greenland

Dear Golfing Friends,

I just want to send a quick note to report on women’s golf in Nuuk, Greenland—the capital city has only 20,000 people, but an active women’s club! They play outdoors for about three months of the year and indoors on a simulator the rest of the year. Since this was our destination, I made a tee time with Klaus, the head pro. Turns out, no tee time needed. It was late in the day, so we had the course to ourselves— we had plenty of light because this is the Arctic, after all.

Maria met us to check us in and fit us with rental clubs, then joined us as a friend and forecaddie. She made sure we found every shot and used our assigned “rock club” if ever near the rocks! What a great game on a beautiful course! If you’re ever in the area… otherwise, isn’t it nice to know that our wonderful game transcends culture and climate? See photos below:

This is the Nuuk, Greenland, Ladies GolfKlub. The balloons are to celebrate their 25th year as a club.
Maria is on the first tee. All tees are played off mats, though it’s okay to hit off the fairway (watch out for mud and temporary water, though!) Rock shots are hit with a designated “rock club”.
This is the 7th green, with very thick grass on the green and scenic rocks behind—and everywhere! Lovely, but challenging!
This is a view back from the 18th fairway, across the water hazard to the 1st fairway. Plenty of grass!
Maria on the 6th hole, par 3, daring to hit out of the water. She got wet. We all laughed— good fun!
The simulator where indoor golf is played. Maria is the indoor club champion! We’re so proud of her!! She assures us that there are plenty of hazards in indoor golf and that it allows for chips and putts as well. More video coming later when the season starts.

Thanks for reading!!
